‍Why We Exist: Filling a Critical Gap in North Carolina’s Policy Landscape

We believe that sustainable business and economic growth is the key to unlocking a better future for all North Carolinians. Too often though, public policy discussions in our state become polarized, driven by partisan agendas that prioritize electoral politics over meaningful progress. The result? Policies that fail to address the true long-term needs of our state’s businesses and citizens. 

This is why the NC Forum was created. We are a non-profit, non-partisan research organization with a singular focus on addressing key business issues to create measurable, lasting impact for the NC economy and our citizens. 

Our Vision: To Make NC a Top State to Live

Our vision is simple – to make NC a top state to live by promoting sustainable business growth that creates better jobs and a higher quality of life for all citizens. That last part is critical. Growth that doesn’t lead to better jobs and a better quality of life for citizens is not sustainable. By fostering an environment where businesses can generate sustainable growth, we help build a state where everyone—from business owners to employees, from rural towns to urban centers—can thrive.

Our Approach: Data-Driven, Local Focus, Clear Communication

So how do we achieve our vision? We believe the starting point is developing a clear understanding of where the NC economy is today. We employ rigorous, data-driven research to ensure our analysis is based on measurable evidence and not political narratives. We engage with a diverse array of stakeholders to ensure our research is thorough, and incorporates all key factors that influence business and economic success. This allows us to continuously and accurately assess our economic and business performance, identifying strengths, weaknesses and opportunities. 

We also focus on North Carolina-based businesses—those that are rooted in our communities, employ our residents, and drive local economic growth. Too often, policy decisions benefit large conglomerates, with deep pockets but minimal local presence, at the expense of homegrown businesses. 

Finally, we recognize that great research and analysis is meaningless if it isn’t distilled into clear and persuasive messaging for a broad audience. We present our work in many formats from detailed policy briefs to short-form newsletters to social media graphics and everything in between. This is critical to deepen understanding, elevate policy debates, and drive positive change for NC businesses and citizens.
